An ice cream plant and a cheese plant were among the dairy processors honored in April in the 2013 U.S. Dairy Sustainability Awards program of the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy, Rosemont, Ill.
Joseph Gallo Farms, maker of Joseph Farms Cheese, was awarded the Governor’s Environmental and Economic Leadership Award for its sustainable farming and cheese making at a ceremony held Jan. 22 in Sacramento, Calif.
Two organizations managed by Dairy Management Inc., Rosemont, Ill., seek entries to their contests. The Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy, seeks entries to its U.S. Dairy Sustainability Awards program. The Dairy Research Institute has issued a call for entries to its New Product Competition.

Brian Pacheco, a fourth-generation dairyman from Kerman, Calif., is honored by his alma mater, the University of California, Davis, with an “Award of Distinction” from the university’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CA&ES). The award is presented annually to those whose contributions and achievements enhance the college’s ability to provide cutting-edge research, top-notch education, and innovative outreach.
Flagsheep from Beecher’s Handmade Cheese was named the Best of Show in the 2012 competition of the American Cheese Society. The cheesemaker has locations in Seattle and New York City.
