Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, many consumers already read labels to confirm food items met their standards — whether in terms of sustainability or nutrition. However, the health and safety concerns that defined the tumultuous past year-plus cemented consumer interest not only in the source of the foods they eat, but also in the ingredients that make up such items.
The cooperative said it assembled a team of experts in the field of sustainability across numerous priority areas: from environmental stewardship to employee welfare to animal husbandry and beyond.

The Hershey Company, Land O’Lakes Inc. and the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay said they are partnering to implement on-farm best management practices to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help improve water quality in the Chesapeake Bay watershed.
Food and beverage manufacturers have made great strides during the past couple of decades when it comes to sustainability, and dairy processors are no exception. In fact, many — if not most — dairy processors have set ambitious sustainability goals and are working hard to attain them.
A company’s environmental sustainability story — or lack thereof — is increasingly influencing consumer purchasing habits. In fact, a recent survey from IBM Institute for Business Value found that 54% of consumers “are willing to pay a premium for brands that are sustainable and/or environmentally responsible.”
One might think that consumers would have put sustainability on the back burner amid the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, that appears to be far from the case.
Almost 80 winners from more than 270 nominees have been recognized over the past decade.

The U.S. Dairy Sustainability Awards program — celebrating its 10-year anniversary — has a new class of seven winners that demonstrate excellence in sustainability and contributions to the industrywide 2050 Environmental Stewardship Goals, as well as positive efforts in communities.

Chicago-based TC Transcontinental Packaging said it was named the winner for Innovations in Sustainability in this year’s Flexographic Technical Association Sustainability Excellence Award competition for its Integritite post-consumer recycled (PCR) collation shrink film.
Sustainability is becoming an increasingly important subject for dairy processors. With more operators seeking to “go green” to meet the growing eco-focus by consumers, retailers, and business partners, the ability to reduce wastewater and energy during production can cut costs while enhancing a company’s “eco halo.”
The association urges the U.S. government to proactively protect U.S. dairy trade.
