LED lights in retailers’ milk display cases do more than just reduce energy bills. They also help milk taste better, according to researchers at Virginia Tech, Blacksburg.
The AGA Research Foundation and The Dannon Co. presented the 2017 AGA-Dannon Gut Microbiome in Health Award to Dr. Gary D. Wu for his research on microbiota in the human gut.
Dairy marketers take note. Milk from cows fed a grass diet can create a distinguishable value-added niche in the dairy case. Organic Valley and Maple Hill Creamery, two dairy brands using the grass milk label, were in the news at the end of 2016.
But it is going to cost more. The USDA forecasts less milk in 2017 but a growing supply through the year 2024 along with steadily increasing prices. Its economic assumptions include moderate growth in GDP and inflation, and low unemployment.
USDA lowers its milk production forecast for 2017 as slower growth in cow numbers more than offsets slightly higher growth in milk per cow.
