New FT-NIR spectroscopy for dairy applications

Liquid milk products like whey, cream, whey concentrates and lactose concentrates  can easily be analyzed using FT-NIR spectroscopy. With Bruker’s new MPA-D: Simply One FT-NIR, the liquid samples are measured in transmission with a path length of 1 millimeter. This large path length, compared to mid-IR spectroscopy allows for the analysis of un-homogenized liquid dairy products as well as solid dairy products.

QuickCheck Graphic Cryoscope

Page & Pedersen’s QuickCheck Graphic Cryoscope provides accurate information about more than milk. Freezing-point cryoscopes were developed as a rapid method to test milk for added water. The QC-IV/GR complies with internationally reviewed and recommended methods for that application. The real-time freezing-point graph gives greater insight into effectiveness of lactose hydrolysis or stability of ice cream subjected to heat shock.

Bioluminescence gives fast microbial detection

Weber Scientific’s MicroSnap methodology correlates relative light units (RLU) to colony forming units as found in traditional plating and colony counting techniques. Micro-Snap uses bioluminescence for the detection and correlation to numbers of bacteria. The test consists of an enrichment device and a detection device. Light is generated when enzymes that are characteristic of specific bacteria react with specialized substrates. The light generating signal is then quantified in a sensitive Ensure luminometer.
