A load of unique, new ice cream flavors, many of which are inspired by cakes and other baked goods, were introduced from several processors just in time for summer.
Unilever, Englewood Cliffs, N.J, added two new limited-edition ice cream flavors to its Breyers line. The focus is on indulgence, as cake and baked goods take the lead.
The new flavors are:
- Strawberry Shortcake — vanilla sweet cream flavor with a strawberry swirl and cake pieces.
- Apple Cinnamon Crumble — apple flavor with an apple cinnamon swirl and pie crust pieces.
Both of the new flavors have 170 calories and 5 fat grams per serving. The Strawberry Shortcake hit stores in March and is available until August. The Apple Cinnamon Crumble is available this October through December. The ice cream is sold in 48-ounce containers for a suggested retail price of $3.50 to $5.99.

Mooresville, N.C.-based Mooresville Ice Cream Co., makers of Front Porch Carolina Churned Ice Cream, launched four new flavors to its Southern-inspired ice cream line. The new flavors, emphasizing a Southern dessert influence, are — County Fair Fried Apple Pie, Happily Pineapply Upside Down Cake, My-O-My Peanut Butter Pie and Wildly Wildberry Cheesecake.
All four flavors are available in pints in select grocer’s freezers and at the authentic ice cream parlor located next to the original creamery in downtown Mooresville. The pint-sized ice cream is also now available in the frozen section of two new retailers, Kroger and Walmart.
The two new retailers expands Front Porch’s distribution from 1,500 (BI-LO, Food City, Food Lion, Harris Teeter, Ingles, Lowes Foods and Piggly Wiggly stores in Alabama, Washington DC, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia) to now almost 2,000 retailers. The ice cream can now be found westward into Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Virginia.
Another ice cream company that’s jumping on the cake flavor bandwagon is Blue Bell, Brenham, Texas. The company introduced its newest flavor — Italian Cream Cake Ice Cream — which features vanilla ice cream with pieces of Italian cream cake, shredded coconut, roasted pecans and a cream cheese icing swirl.
The ice cream is sold in half gallon and pint sizes for a suggested retail price of $7.39 and $2.15, respectively.
The new flavor joins its other cake-inspired ice creams, Birthday Cake and Red Velvet Cake (introduced last year). The new flavor hit grocer’s freezer sections in May.
