The Standard of Identity (SOI) for yogurt was established in 1981. But now the SOI is changing and products may not meet new FDA standards; what you need to know to meet federal standards to use the term “yogurt” on the label. 

On March 22, FDA provided a notice of a stay of the effectiveness of certain provisions of a final rule published in the Federal Register of June 11, 2021 (“Petition for an Administrative Stay of Action: Milk and Cream; Definitions and Standards of Identity for Yogurt, Lowfat Yogurt, and Nonfat Yogurt”).

In mid-December, the U.S. Senate presided over the confirmation hearing of Dr. Robert Califf, President Biden’s nominee to serve as commissioner of FDA.
