Dairy processing waste streams can create clean energy in the form of biogas. Water treatment systems can be designed to generate biogas and reuse water, reducing demand for fresh water.
Report recommends building 300 more anaerobic digesters (ADs) in the state to harness this methane rather than letting it escape into the atmosphere.

Expanding anaerobic digestion of New York's organic waste streams could cut the state's methane emissions 15% while improving public health and creating jobs, a New York State study suggests
Together with Vanguard Renewables, Vermont Creamery is making significant strides towards food waste reduction.
March 29, 2023
In August, Vermont Creamery formally joined the Farm-Powered Strategic Alliance, a group of food and beverage companies committed to reducing food waste and sourcing renewable energy.
Pentair has developed the anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) technology, together with partner Biothane. The new technology achieves a complete retention of the biomass in the anaerobic digester and brings a significant improvement of the digestion process: more robust, smaller footprint, fully automated operation, higher biogas production efficiency and superior effluent quality (free of suspended solids and typically 99% COD reduction).
ADI Systems’ anaerobic ADI-BVF digester treats raw process wastewater comprised of powder, cheese and high-strength salty whey before it flows into a pre-existing biological nutrient removal system.
