While the popularity of Greek yogurt has been the biggest story in the dairy industry in the last few years, it is not the only dairy category showing growth, according to a survey of dairy processors. Other growing categories are cheese, new flavors of ice cream and milk, by-products (whey and protein concentrates), powdered milk, almond milk and coconut water.
Oregon’s Umpqua Dairy promotes the quality and freshness of its locally sourced milk. The third-generation family business, which also makes cottage cheese, sour cream, ice cream and other dairy products, is expanding beyond the Pacific Northwest.
A brand new state-of-the-art innovation center is set to become the epicenter for Arla’s product development for the entire world. Located in Aarhus, Denmark it will employ 120 people as Arla looks to invest over a quarter of a billion DKK in its construction. Golden State Foods (GSF), Irvine, Calif., said on Wednesday it acquired a controlling interest in KanPak U.S., Arkansas City, Kan. KanPak produces a variety of dairy-based products such as smoothies, ice cream, milk shake base, packaged milk, coffees, creamers, frozen desserts and specialty beverages using aseptic processing technology.
The $40 million plant will serve a region where milk production is steadily outpacing local plant capacity.

Yoplait yogurt products contributed to a first-quarter sales increase at Minneapolis-based General Mills. Net sales rose 8% to $4.37 billion in the quarter ended Aug. 25, with new businesses contributing 5 percentage points of the growth, according to the company.

Darigold Inc., Seattle, disputed the assertion made by the Teamsters today that it walked out of federal mediation talks late Monday night. Darigold General Counsel and Senior Vice President Steven Rowe told Dairy Foods that some members of the dairy cooperative's team did leave the meeting but continued to participate by telephone after they arrived home. Rowe said the bargaining session lasted from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.
