When we last reported on sales within the U.S. refrigerated retail milk category back in our February issue, the situation was quite rosy. Dollar sales had risen significantly during the 52-week reporting period, and unit sales growth was solid, too.
Unlike in many previous years, this year’s Dairy 100 rankings reflect no deletions or additions — or even major losses or gains, with a few exceptions.
A lot can happen in a year. The COVID-19 pandemic-spurred doom-and-gloom situation that existed when we last published our annual Dairy 100 — ranging from lost dairy sales in foodservice to dairy export-related roadblocks — has transformed into a decidedly sunnier situation.

Bel Brands USA, Chicago, announced a new program in partnership with Kansas City, Kan.-based Dairy Farmers of America (DFA) to implement and measure sustainable cooling practices designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by cutting on-farm energy usage.
This is the 18th year IDFA has sponsored the Dairy Industry Safety Recognition Award program, highlighting the outstanding workplace safety achievements of U.S. dairy companies.
The acquisition will expand Lifeway Foods’ position within the better-for-you drinkable dairy space.

Lifeway Foods Inc., a Morton Grove, Ill.-based supplier of kefir and other fermented probiotic products to support the microbiome, announced its intent to acquire certain assets of privately held Laguna Beach, Calif.-based GlenOaks Farms Inc., a drinkable yogurt brand founded in 1984.
Dairy Foods has a long tradition of devoting part of the August issue to our “Plant of the Year” winner. Previously, we’d nominate only the dairy plants we’d profiled in the past 18 months, and allowed readers to choose the winning facility. But this year we decided to do things a little differently: We opened up nominations to any exceptional U.S. dairy plant.

Certified B Corporation and artisan cheese maker Rogue Creamery said it was recognized on yet another level: as a 2021 Best for the World B Corporation, ranking in the top 5% of B Corps worldwide for its positive impact on people and planet.
When we last covered sales within the retail ice cream/sherbet category (in our January 2021 issue), the segment was enjoying double-digit growth in both dollars and units. Eight months later — with stay-at-home dictates over and many consumers no longer indulging in as many comfort foods — retail ice cream/sherbet sales are not soaring quite as high.
