Smith Dairy Products Co., Orrville, Ohio, marked national ice cream month in July by taking a look back at some of its famously successful, and just plain infamous flavor ideas. Some were quite surprising, others...well, duh.
"The world just wasn't ready for caramel popcorn ice cream," said Marketing Mgr. Penny Baker. "During National Ice Cream Month, we like to take a look back at what our company has done over the years," Baker said.
"We've had so many successes, like Ruggles® Bumpy Road," Baker continued. "It was a Limited Edition flavor that we made a permanent part of our line after we received a flood of e-mails, phone calls, and letters from hungry consumers."
Among the biggest hits for Smith Dairy is its line of Grandma Ruggles Pie flavors. Among the flops was a 1960's retro flavor called Peace and Love Cherries that seemed to hit the shelves as 60s nostalgia left town.
