London-based Tate & Lyle, a global provider of food and beverage solutions and ingredients, said it launched Fibre University — a new online modular course designed to help formulators and food scientists solve even the toughest fiber formulation challenges.
Nutritionists recommend a daily fiber consumption of 25 grams for women and 38 grams for men, but most people in the United States get only half that amount.
The new Nutrition Facts regulations redefine fiber, adding a requirement that certain isolated or synthetic fiber ingredients must show a beneficial effect on human health. But implementation of those new regulations will probably be postponed until 2020.
The FDA currently recognizes seven fibers as having health benefits. The new definition is evolving. Keep watch for newly approved beneficial fibers so you can adjust formulas and labels accordingly.

Dairy foods aren’t naturally great sources of fiber, but many fiber ingredients are added to dairy foods. The new Nutrition Facts regulations have redefined fiber, increasing the Daily Value from 25 to 28 grams, and making the calculation of fiber content on the food label more complicated.
