Newsline: Lactose Intolerance Often Self-Diagnosed

September 9, 2003
The majority of Americans claiming to be Lactose Intolerant have not been diagnosed by a doctor.

BERKELEY, Calif.—The majority of Americans claiming to be Lactose Intolerant have not been diagnosed by a doctor, or any other medical professional, according to recently released research.

The California Milk Processor Board (CMPB) funded the study and issued a press release last month warning that consumers may be putting themselves, not to mention the industry, at risk by eliminating dairy from their diets. In a study of 3,000 people nationwide, 62% of respondents said they “self-diagnosed” the condition, CMPB said.
