Fal Foods USA opened a manufacturing plant in Queens, New York to produce DF Mavens nondairy desserts. Unilever’s Breyers started offering 36 gluten-free ice cream varieties in May. Mayfield Dairy, Birmingham, Ala., received the Dean Foods CEO Quality Award for ice cream.
Mr. Whitehead was interested in every aspect if the dairy industry, taking college courses in business administration and dairy sciences at Rutgers College at night.

On May 16, Mr. Whitehead passed away at his home in Paramus, N.J., surrounded by his family. He managed Dairylea plants in Woodside Queens and Goshen, N.Y., and was president of Dellwood Foods.

Daisy Brand broke ground last week on a sour cream facility in Wayne County, Ohio. The 200,000 square-foot state-of-the-art facility to be built in the city of Wooster is expected to be fully operational by late 2015. The $116 million project is expected to add 89 jobs
Milkco Inc., Asheville, N.C., received the Member of the Year award from All Star Association Inc. at the association’s 56th annual convention in Orlando, Fla., in March. Milkco, a subsidiary of the grocery chain Ingles Markets, also provides dairy, citrus, tea, ice cream mix and bottled water to foodservice distributors, grocery warehouses and independent specialty retailers in 10 states.
The two-day meeting consists of programs, social events, a golf outing, and the opportunity to network.

Land O'Lakes Inc. announced today that it is buying silos, vats and other equipment totaling millions of dollars for its Kiel, Wis., cheese plant. Meanwhile, it will close its Denmark, Wis., plant on July 1.
Proceeds benefit dairy industry education programs, student scholarships, dairy farmer organizations and other causes.

Banana pudding, lemon poppy pound cake, and Greek yogurt with strawberries and granola were judged to be the most innovative ice cream flavors at the International Dairy Foods Association's Innovative Ice Cream Flavor Contest.
The Asian market is served by the Australian plant which ships single-serve cups of plain and flavored yogurts and multiserve containers of plain yogurt.

Chobani is exporting Greek yogurt to Singapore, Malaysia and Panama. The New Berlin, N.Y.-based dairy processor also has a plant in Idaho and currently sells in Australia, where it has a third manufacturing facility.
